Hello, my name is Sir Reginald

Hi, my name is Sir Reginald. The human who I take care of and love dearly goes by the name of Jon. He works at a paint store so is gone a lot during the week. When he’s away I am in charge of his mom. I check in on her several times during the day to make sure that she is doing okay and that the dog, Lazarus, and the cat, Sebastion, (who are in charge of taking care of Jon’s brother Dan) are behaving and not getting on her nerves. Lazarus is like a needy toddler and constantly follows her everywhere! She is an introvert. You know what introverts are like! They need their space! Sebastian is an introvert and understands that. He leaves Jon’s mom alone and will only check in occasionally to see how she is doing. I think that Lazarus and Sebastian think that it’s their job to look after her while the person they are in charge of is away. I don’t know how to get it through their heads that I am the one who is in charge of her. Oh, well, I guess we can all three work together to make sure she is fine.

Jon’s mom says that she is an author, artist, and poet. When Jon, Dan, and the other humans in the house are away for the day she tries to get in some writing or painting depending on the day. It is my job to remind her that it’s time for her to take a break from creating. I tell her to play with me for a bit or at least sit down with a book and hold and pet me while she reads. It’s a good thing that I’m around or she will work all the time and not get in any break to reset her creative juices. Lazarus and Sebastion think that they are also reminding her to take a break but I don’t think they are doing as good of a job as I do. Lazarus just says that he needs a bathroom break. All Sebastian does is rub her legs or jump up on her lap. She often reaches down and pets him for a bit but keeps writing or painting when he does that. Sebastian rarely succeeds in getting her to take a break.

I am way more successful than the other human caretakers in this house. For example, this morning I noticed the sun was coming in Jon’s bedroom window extra brightly. I looked up and asked the sunbeam what the weather was like outside. The sunbeam replied that it was a warm spring day and a perfect day to take my human’s mom outdoors on an adventure. So I used my special powers to persuade her to go outside with me. I reminded her to grab a book, some water, and may protective safety pen as we headed outdoors. She read while I nibbled on the grass and explained to her why it was good for her health to sit outdoors in the sun and read a book. Then after a while, I reminded her that it was time to put the book aside and hold me for a bit. We sat and watched the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks together. I told her how important self-care is for the mental health of humans. She told me that she agreed and created a YouTube video on that very topic! My human’s mom is pretty smart. I think that it’s because I am here to teach her!

As you can tell, it is a difficult job being in charge of humans but I enjoy doing it. Especially when I can persuade them to take me outside. Another thing I enjoy doing when my human is at work is to sit with his mom while she writes and make sure that she is writing her stories and poetry correctly. I’ve caught her making mistakes and have had to correct her. It’s a good thing that she has me as her advisor and editor.

Well, it was fun chatting with you all. My human, Jon is almost done cleaning my pen and his mom is telling me that she wants her laptop back. Also, I’m getting a little drowsy. I think that it is almost time for my afternoon nap.
